MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team swept its home opening doubleheader against Great American Conference foe Oklahoma Baptist Sunday afternoon by final scores of 2-1, and 4-1.
The first contest of the day for Arkansas-Monticello (14-6, 8-2 GAC) featured the Blossoms gaining an early advantage over the Bison of OBU (6-10, 1-9 GAC) in the second inning after a McKenzie Rice single to center field brought in a run.
After surrendering a home-run in the third inning to tie up the game, Maranda Clendenin grounded out to second base which saw a run cross the plate to give UAM the 2-1 lead.
Kendra Coleman (9-1) finished off Oklahoma Baptist in the following two innings to earn her ninth win of the season, and recorded a season high 11 strikeouts.
The second match-up of the day for UAM saw the Bison crossing the plate first in the opening inning on a single to center field.
The Blossoms claimed the lead in the bottom of the third however after RBI singles by Ashton Currey and Meagan Duchesne saw four total runs score in favor of UAM, and the Blossoms held onto the lead for the remainder of the game to win 4-1.
Kaylee Freeman picked up her first win of the year inside the circle after throwing 5.0 innings, and Coleman recorded her second save pitching 2.0 overall innings and striking out three batters.
UAM will return to the field next on Monday, March 13 as the Blossoms will conclude its series with Oklahoma Baptist with a doubleheader, with game one is slated for 1 p.m. at Blossoms Field.
