MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team defeated Great American Conference opponent Southeastern Oklahoma State twice Saturday afternoon at home by final scores of 3-1, and 4-3.
UAM (6-8, 4-2 GAC) began game one of the day against the Savage Storm of SOSU (1-11, 0-6 GAC) with a bang after a Sean Wagner two-run home-run to deep left field put the Weevils out in front in the bottom of the first inning.
The Weevils and the Savage Storm each recorded a run in the sixth inning, but the combined relief efforts of Landon McFadden, and Dawson Moser (S, 2) was enough to put the game away at 3-1.
The second match-up of the afternoon once again saw Arkansas-Monticello on the board first in the opening inning after Drake Rowton was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score a run. Brian Ray singled to left field the following inning to give UAM the 2-0 advantage.
After allowing three total runs in the top of the seventh inning, Nick Piraino and Ray each recorded a hit to see the Weevils with runners on second and third in the bottom half of the inning. Andres Rios then singled up the middle into center field scoring both runs to give UAM the walk-off victory and the series sweep.
Piraino finished 3-for-3 in the second contest with two runs scored, and Rios finished the game with two hits and two RBIs.
